One of the most common questions I get before a family session is: “What should we wear?” If you’re planning family photos in Orange County—whether that’s a park in Yorba Linda, a beach session, or an urban spot in Fullerton—this guide will help you choose outfits that photograph beautifully without the stress.
The goal is simple: timeless, natural photos that feel like you.
Start with Neutrals
Neutral tones photograph best in Southern California’s natural light. Think creams, whites, tans, browns, soft grays, denim, olive, and muted blues. These colors work well year-round and won’t compete with the scenery.
Once you choose a neutral base, add subtle pops of color through texture or one standout piece.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
Instead of everyone wearing the same outfit, choose a color palette of 3–5 colors and mix them throughout the family.
Some easy palettes:
Cream, tan, olive, and denim
Beige, brown, rust, and ivory
Gray, blush, and soft navy
This creates a cohesive look without feeling stiff or overly styled.
Keep Patterns Simple
If you love patterns, keep them subtle—small florals, soft plaids, or light stripes work best. Avoid bold logos or busy prints that pull attention away from faces.
A good rule: if one person wears a pattern, keep everyone else more neutral and solid colors.

Choose Comfort-Friendly Outfits
Family sessions are relaxed and movement-based—walking, sitting, laughing, and interacting. Choose outfits you can move in comfortably. Long, flowy dresses are great for showing movement instead of stiff poses. When you feel good, it shows in your photos.
Shoes Complete the Look
Neutral shoes like tan, brown, white, or soft gray photograph best. Try to avoid athletic sneakers or bright colors unless they’re part of your everyday style.
For beach sessions, barefoot is always a great option.
